Engineering
After a crewmembers time in the Deck Department, they
can elect to pursue a position in the engineering department. As an
engineering crewmember they will learn how to maintain and service all of
the mechanical and electrical equipment of a vessel. The crew is
responsible for all maintenance of the Caterpillar D379 main engines, the
Caterpillar D330 50 KW generators, the hydraulic systems that provide
steering and windlass power, the electrical systems that provide lights
and power to the ship, and all other mechanical systems.
The
engineering Department is Led by a Crew Leader (a youth member under the
Bosun and Bosun's Mate) and an Assistant Crew Leader. The boys run
their department under the supervision of the Chief Engineering Officer
and his Engineering Mates (adult leaders).
